According to the Yellow Social Media report, 60% of people say they use the internet more than five times per day.

1. Facebook – 15,000,000 Monthly Active Australian Users (steady)

The Yellow Social Media report mentions that over 91% Aussies use Facebook which includes 95% of women and 88% of men. The average user spends almost 10 hours a week on Facebook. More Australian businesses advertise on Facebook – around 9 in 10 SMBs and large businesses helping them connect with a larger audience.

 

2. Youtube – 15,000,000 Unique Australian Visitors per month (UAVs)

53% of the total population watches videos on YouTube which includes 56% of men and 50% of women. While 46% people prefer sharing their photos and videos online. Video is the most effective type of content for consumers which keeps them engaged. However, most businesses are still trying to figure out the courage to produce video content due to the effort and time required in it.

 

3. Instagram – 9,000,000 Monthly Active Australian Users (FB/ Instagram data)

Instagram is Australia’s favourite image-sharing app and thus retains a stable user base along with increasing the number of users every year. This app is more popular with women than men (44% vs 34%). Instagram users are more likely to follow brands and influencers to know about the latest trends in the market. Instagram was formerly more popular with SMBs but has now been taken over by large business advertisers from 20% to 46% according to The Yellow.

 

 

4. Whatsapp – 7,000,000 Active Australian Users

The number of Whatsapp users has increased steadily in Australia,making it the second most popular social media messaging service after Facebook’s messenger. Currently, the app does not support any kind of advert but some rumors believe that the app might start displayings ads in the near future. 

 

5. Snapchat – 6,400,000 Monthly Active Australian Users (Snapchat data)

Snapchat is considered to be the fastest growing app in Australia, rising two places from last year’s count. Further, more than 4.5 million Aussies use Snapchat everyday i.e. around 36 times per week on an average. Snapchat is more popular with younger demographics. It includes 49% of 18-29 year olds and also is used more by males than females (28% vs 17%).
